about

What really struck me about this song, that seemed unusually haunting, was the fact that the lyrics and "feel" of the melody clashed - whilst the lyrics proclaim
"Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel.",
the overall tune of this very old carol feels absolutely empty and on the verge of losing hope.
That unusual contrast only accentuated the message behind the song - a song sung to a nation who had waited for years and years... for the promise of a Saviour...
Hence, in my rendition of this haunting carol, I utilized the echo-ey emptiness of Gregorian-chat styled singing to play up the stark emptiness in the verse of the song.

This was also around the time I bought my first ukulele (2009)..., so I decided to blend it with the sounds of my uke for a more "dated" sound.

The first ever recording (demo track available on my Reverbnation page) of the arrangement was done in my studio apartment in Bangkok. :)

lyrics

LYRICS:
O come, O come, Emmanuel
And ransom captive Israel
That mourns in lonely exile here
Until the Son of God appear
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel.
